Is cereal a good breakfast food?
Some of us grew up eating cereal! Mmm the thought of it brings back some fun memories and makes my mouth water…Count Chocula, Lucky Charms, Honey Bunches of Oats, Corn Pops… just to name a few lol!
I get asked quite often if cereal is a good breakfast choice, since IT IS so convenient to prepare in the morning. I’ve done my research and discovered most cereals are loaded with sugar, low in fiber and low protein.. so it’s not doing the best job at fueling your body physically and mentally for the day ahead. It’s also easy to overeat a serving of cereal. When you start your morning with a high sugar/high carbohydrate intake without much fiber or protein you’re setting yourself up for a sugar crash and more sugary cravings later in the day.
Here are some cereals we suggest starting with our most favorite:
Nature’s Path Organic Flax Plus
¾ cup -110 calories, 5 grams of fiber, 4 grams of sugar, 1.5 grams of fat
Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes
¾ cup -120 calories, 5 grams of fiber, 4 grams of sugar, 1 gram of fat
Shredded Wheat
1 cup -170 calories, 6 grams of fiber, 0 grams of sugar, 1 gram of fat
Ezekiel Cereals
½ cup- 190 calories 6 grams of fiber, 0 grams of sugar, 1 gram of fat
Grape Nuts
½ cup -200 calories 7 grams of fiber, 5 grams of sugar, 1 gram of fat
All bran Flakes
1 cup -120 calories 5 grams of fiber, 5 grams of sugar, 1 gram of fat
Cheerios
1 cup- 100 calories, 3 grams of fiber, and 1 grams of sugar and 2 grams of fat
Special K Original
1 cup – 120 calories 0 grams of fiber, 4 grams of sugar, 0.5 grams of fat
Rice Krispies
1 cup 110 calories, 3 grams of sugar, 0 grams of fat and 0 grams of fiber
